Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing Introduces SINOMV Offline Inspection System to Strengthen Cigarette Packaging Quality Control

2025-12-19

Background

Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing Co., Ltd. is a core supplier of cigarette packaging for Shandong China Tobacco Industry Co., Ltd. and one of the key cigarette packaging printers in northern China.

The company produces a large volume of cigarette packaging for the domestic market, where quality requirements are extremely strict and even minor printing deviations can lead to rejection. For Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing, maintaining stable print quality is not only a production requirement but also a critical responsibility within the tobacco supply chain.

Challenges

Cigarette packaging integrates a wide range of critical elements, including printed graphics, variable information, QR codes, and anti-counterfeiting features. Quality inspection must cover multiple dimensions, such as appearance defects, dimensional accuracy, and compliance-related information.

Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing faced several key challenges:

  • Extremely low defect tolerance

Certain defects as small as 0.1 mm are considered unacceptable in cigarette packaging.

  • Limitations of manual inspection

Manual visual inspection is time-consuming and highly dependent on operator experience, increasing the risk of missed defects and inconsistent quality judgments.

  • Difficulty inspecting high-reflective materials

Common cigarette packaging substrates such as laser paper, aluminized paper, and gold or silver cardboard have highly reflective surfaces. Conventional vision inspection systems often struggle with reflections and uneven lighting, leading to false detections or missed defects.

Solution

To further strengthen quality control during and after printing, Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing introduced the SINOMV offline inspection system for offset printing.

The system is designed for high-precision print comparison and defect detection in demanding packaging applications. It integrates imaging, inspection algorithms and a dedicated illumination structure into a single system.

An important part of this design is the built-in P9 light source. As a core component of the system, the P9 light source provides uniform and stable illumination across the printed surface. By reducing glare, shadows and overexposure, it significantly improves image quality when inspecting highly reflective cigarette packaging materials. This stable image foundation allows the inspection algorithms to identify defects more reliably.

With dot-level inspection accuracy, the system can detect defects as small as 0.06 mm × 0.06 mm, including missing print, ghosting, scratches, pinholes, stains and misregistration. As an offline solution, it enables full-sheet inspection without affecting the production line, making it suitable for first article inspection and sampling checks.

The SINOMV offline inspection system was delivered in a near-ready configuration. After on-site installation and commissioning by SINOMV engineers, the system was quickly put into operation without disrupting normal production schedules.

In practical use, a full-sheet inspection typically takes around 30 seconds. This allows Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing to carry out detailed inspections while maintaining overall production efficiency.

Results

After the system was put into use, Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing achieved clear improvements in quality management.

Inspection time for first articles and sampling checks was significantly reduced, easing the workload of quality control staff. At the same time, the detection rate of micro-defects increased, helping the company identify process-related issues at an earlier stage.

By reducing missed defects, the system also lowered the risk of large-scale rework or scrap, contributing to cost savings. Inspection results can be stored and retrieved when needed, supporting quality traceability and providing useful data for ongoing process optimization.

Conclusion

The application of the SINOMV offline inspection system at Yizhong (Qingdao) Printing shows how advanced vision inspection technology can support the strict quality requirements of cigarette packaging production.

By combining high inspection accuracy with stable imaging on reflective materials through its built-in P9 light source, the system helps improve quality consistency while maintaining efficient production. Offline vision inspection has become an important tool for cigarette packaging printers seeking more reliable and controllable quality management.
